25 August 2018 marks the first year since hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people fled persecution and violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State and sought refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh. This crisis stands out among recent global refugee flows due to the large number of people who fled in an extremely short period of time.

Director-General's annual letter
Our first year together
"It's now been just over a year since I received the greatest honour of my life and was elected to become the eighth Director-General of the World Health Organization."

So begins Dr Tedros's first annual letter. The letter outlines our major achievements of the last year, beginning with the endorsement of our 13th General Programme of Work, our work in emergency situations, our efforts to drive increased political commitment and the strengthening of our ties with partners, whose collaboration is so critical to our work.
